A SERIES of unwelcome wake-up calls over the past couple of weeks has disturbed village residents because of a store's faulty alarm system.

The anti-burglar alarm at the Co-op store in Haseldine Road, London Colney, has been going off at random intervals in the middle of the night and nearby residents say that they have reached the end of their tether.

Anderson Mayers, aged 40, lives in Haseldine Road opposite the Co-op building and said that he was getting sleepier by the day. He pointed out: "You start to feel very tired when you're on four to five hours tops of sleep a night. Also, the tone of the alarm is very annoying because it's so loud and high-pitched even with the windows shut."

The alarm first went off on November 18 and has been ringing for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, going off up to 10 times a day.

Mr Mayers said that the worst day was Friday, November 21, when the alarm sounded at frequent intervals from 10.30pm all the way through to 2am. Police were called twice but to no avail and residents had to wait for the alarm to stop by itself.

So far, there have been no incidents this week but a spokesperson from the Co-op admitted that the system had still not been fixed.

She added: "There is a fault with the new alarm system we have installed at our London Colney store and we are extremely sorry for any noise and disturbance we have caused to our neighbours. Engineers are investigating the fault and we hope to resolve the problem as quickly as possible."

Mr Mayers said of the Co-op: "To be fair, they have been very apologetic and helpful. My letter of complaint was answered quickly and I've been given a £10 voucher for my troubles. I just hope I have plenty of good nights sleep to make up for it!
