A SERVICE station in St Albans was broken into for the sake of cigarettes this week.
An offender broke into Sainsbury’s Local on Marshalswick Lane at around 1.45am yesterday morning, allegedly stealing only a few packs of cigarettes.
The thief used some kind of ram to distort the store’s metal gates, leaving a great deal of damage - including a smashed window - behind.
Sainsbury’s was shut for most of yesterday, but re-opened this morning. The ATM machine, which was damaged during the incident, is still out of order.
An investigation is currently underway and police are appealing for witnesses to the crime. Anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Jason Finnegan on the non-emergency number 0845 3300 222 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
