A BONFIRE in a field next to a treatment plant led to fears that chemicals could be ignited.
A farmer was burning some agricultural waste in his field adjacent to the Veolia Environmental Services treatment plant along the Redbourn Road in St Albans on Saturday when firefighters were called to the scene at around 12.15 in the afternoon.
Workers at the treatment plant raised the alarm due to concerns that the blaze could affect chemicals stored at the site, although firefighters said there was no real danger as long as the fire didn't spread.
It took the three crews, which included two from St Albans fire station, around two hours to put out the fire.
Their efforts were hampered because there was no direct water supply and they had to shuttle water from a nearby hydrant.
