POLICE have confirmed that chemicals were found in the property where a man's body was found yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon.

But only a small quantity of substances were discovered in the house in Hatfield Road, St Albans, and police stressed that there was absolutely no danger to the public.

A spokesperson also said that the chemicals had nothing to do with terrorism or drug making and that the death of the man in his 20s was being treated as a non-suspicious and tragic incident.

Due to the chemicals being found, a high number of police, fire and ambulance service staff were in attendance and various specialist units were also deployed to deal with the incident, which started at around 2pm after concerns were raised for the man’s welfare.

He was pronounced dead by paramedics shortly after they entered the property at around 3.30pm.

Hatfield Road was closed in both ways between the junctions with Ashley Road and at the small roundabout near Morrisons Supermarket but the road reopened at around 9.30pm.

Police have referred the man’s death to the coroner and an inquest will be opened in due course.
