FIREFIGHTERS were called to a chemical spillage at the day surgery unit at St Albans City Hospital this morning (Friday).
Two crews from St Albans arrived at the scene at around 8.45am after isoflurane, which comes in a liquid form but is administered as a vapour for anaesthesia, had been spilt over two people’s hands.
Staff followed procedure in calling the service but the crews, along with the DEPU (Decontamination Environmental Protection Unit) from Hemel Hempstead, were not required to take any action.
A spokesperson for West Herts Hospitals Trust explained that the vapour is not harmful and disperses as soon as it comes into contact with air.
The windows were opened and firefighters left the scene just after 9am.
Two people received first aid.
