Family and friends of a young girl who died volunteering are putting on a music festival to raise money for charity.

Alice Barnett, 19, from St Albans and her friend Summer Robertson, 21, from Shrewsbury died in 2014 after being swept out to sea in South Africa during a 10-week volunteer programme, four days before they were due to fly home.

The Beautiful Alice festival is being organised by Alice’s mum, Suzie Barnett, and will be set up on private farm land in St Albans, in a secret location which will be revealed when the ticket has been purchased.

They hope to raise money for different charities including The Future of Khmer Children Organisation (FKC), which aims to provide free education to children in Cambodia where Alice’s family have already provided funding for a clean water well and a new classroom.

The festival will take place Saturday, June 4, and will have live performances from different musicians such as Sam Garrett and The Japanese House. There will also be food stalls, a children’s area as well as a main stage and a dance tent.

Suzie said: “We’re determined to make it a wonderful day for everyone to enjoy - young and old - and to celebrate my beautiful daughter and all that she means to us.

“After the festival I will be looking into setting up as a charity ourselves in order to continue our work and our fundraising and to support projects we truly believe provide invaluable support in communities both in the UK and around the world.”

Suzie has also been working closely with the UK government’s department for international development as well as other international experts to try and improve safety standards for young volunteers abroad.

The festival will take place from 1pm-1am and tickets cost £20.
