A PUZZLED St Albans resident is at a loss to explain the plague of peculiar potatoes which have taken over her back garden.
Barbara Downey, aged 70, of Hill Street, has been growing her own vegetables for decades and said that this year's new potato crop, which she planted in March, was the strangest she has ever seen.
Barbara, who also grows runner beans and onions, described the vegetables as "very unique", with one of them resembling a large animal and another, formed from one large potato and several smaller ones, looking like Humpty Dumpty.
Barbara thinks organic manure is to blame for the strange crop: "It's the first year that I've ever gone organic and I don't think I'll be using that kind of manure next year - who knows what could happen! I wouldn't know what to do with yet more strange vegetables.
