Three fire crews had to be sent to a Wheathampstead farm last night, after reports of an explosion.
St Albans Fire say they were alerted at 23.07 to an incident, at which time two fire engines were sent from their station.
Another engine was sent from Wheathampstead.
The crews were on the scene at 23.19, as it was quite a distance.
They found a caravan on fire in the road, however there was not much left of it by the time they got there.
Two hose reels were used to extinguish the fire, with the third engine shuttling back and forth to keep the other two topped up.
The fire was extinguished at 00.07.
Herts Police were called by the fire brigade to remove the vehicle.
A local resident, Andrew Grant, said the caravan had been stuffed full of household and building waste, and he and his family were awoken by the sound of an explosion at around 23.00.
