CRUEL thieves broke into a charity shop in Harpenden on Friday night getting away with 400 in cash.
They got in round the back of the Cancer Research shop in High Street, breaking a window and gaining entry through a fire exit door.
Once inside, they used a hammer to smash down the office door and after a search found the key to the safe.
The theft was not discovered until Saturday morning when co-manager Debbie Hutchinson arrived for work.
The other co-manager Jackie Eels said: "This is such a nasty thing to do. Apart from the money which will not now go to cancer research the damage to the doors will cost a lot to fix."
The shop had to remain closed for around three hours on Saturday morning while police carried out forensic investigations.
