FUNERAL savings belonging to an 83-year-old woman were stolen from her St Albans home last week.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and information about the burglary near Francis Bacon School on Tuesday (September 15) between 3pm and 4pm.

The woman had just returned from shopping but left her key in the outside lock and went into her back garden.

The burglars then gained access to the house through the front door and stole the woman's handbag, which contained a large sum of money, before making off in an unknown direction.

Investigating officer Julie Fewings said: "This crime is particularly upsetting as the money was carried by the lady to ensure she was able to pay for her funeral."

She added: "If anyone one was in the local area at the time and saw someone acting suspiciously or has any knowledge of this crime I would ask that you get in contact as soon as possible."

Julie advised people to avoid keeping large amounts of cash at home, to lock jewellery in a safe and to be aware of bogus callers who may try to gain access to your home.

Anyone with information is asked to contact her on the non-emergency number 0845 33 00 222, alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
