A BOMB scare closed a St Albans city-centre shop last Wednesday afternoon.

A suspicious package was discovered in the food hall department of Marks and Spencer in St Peter's Street at about 5.30pm. When the alert was raised, police officers and firefighters went to the store which was evacuated immediately.

A cordon was then set up around the shop and the area surrounding it including Drovers Way which runs behind the store. Specialist police officers investigated the package and when it was confirmed not to be of danger the cordon was lifted, which was around 7pm.

However police believe the object was left there deliberately with the intention of causing panic.
