A GIANT pink handbag cum flying machine created by a local woman and her three friends will be taking to the skies next month.

Rebecca Partridge, aged 31, who lives off Cell Barnes Lane in St Albans, will be part of the only all-women team to enter the Red Bull Flugtag ('flying-day') challenge taking place on June 7 in London's Hyde Park.

More than 2,000 designs were entered in the competition and Rebecca's team called the Blonde Bimbos were given one of only 40 chances to build their plane and take off from a 20-foot-high platform over the Serpentine Lake.

The fearless team also includes Ozzie Masar and Alice Farmer, along with Tanya Conyers-Silverthorn who came up with the idea for the Blonde Bimbos when she watched the first Red Bull Flugtag in London five years ago and noticed that there were no girl-only teams.

The women wanted to think of the most girlie flying machine possible and couldn't think of anything to fit the bill better than a giant pink handbag.

Celebrity judges will decide the winner based on distance flown and level of creativity but points will also be awarded for the entertainment value of the pre-flight performance.

And before their daring challenge, the girls will arrive on stage in their bimbo costumes dancing to Dolly Parton's Nine to Five and drumming up as much support as possible from the expected 80,000 strong crowd.

Rebecca, whose team name is Flight Lieutenant Silky Pitt, said: "When I was told that we had got through, my initial panic was how we were going to run and launch our craft in stiletto heels without falling over! Now I'm a little concerned about how to make a handbag fly.

"However, after two weekends of solid building we are confident that not only will our handbag fly further than any other craft, our dance routine and Dolly Parton style boobs should get us some bonus points for all the fun we will be bringing to Hyde Park. We have to impress a panel of judges and the whole crowd so I'm hoping the pink fitted tops and hot pants should do it!"

Chief Pilot Fluffy Beckham, aka Ozzie from Potters Bar, said: "I fully expect to take off in Hyde Park and land at Luton airport. The problem I will have is contacting Air Traffic Control as I don't have a radio, just a lipstick and mirror."

The girls wouldn't give away their design secrets but said their essential materials included pink, sparkly material, wood and feathers - "as everyone knows they make you fly".

The public will also have a part in deciding the winner and they can vote for the Blonde Bimbos in the run up to the event at www.redbullflugtag.co.uk where they are currently listed as the favourite team.
