The Bishop of St Albans has said churches are keen to work with the government to make sure people have enough food to eat.
Foodbank charity the Trussell Trust recently announced that the number of food parcels distributed over the last five years has increased by 75 per cent across UK.
The Rt Rev Dr Alan Smith, who has visited a number of foodbanks across the Diocese of St Albans, praised the work of foodbank volunteers and churches which have provided food for those in need.
He said: “Their charitable work is a sign of grassroots commitment to social justice. I am grateful for the hard work they undertake, often with little recognition.
“It is lamentable in one of the richest countries in the world 1.6 million people have needed food parcels over the past year to make ends meet. We in the churches are standing by and we are keen to work with government to see how we can improve the situation.”
