A SOLID sheet of snow in one of their traditional performance places forced St Albans Mummers to move round the corner but aside from the slight switch at the Fighting Cocks, the play was as well received as ever.

The eight-strong St Albans Mummers, who include one woman, Pam Glover, as the Queen of Egypt, put on their Boxing Day performances of St George and the Dragon in several city centre locations including the Town Hall and the Clock Tower.

It was only at the Fighting Cocks that the play had to be switched from its usual location backing on to the river because it was too icy. But it did not move far – under the sign on the other side of the pub – where a patch of ground was ice free and safe for both performers and audience.

Sandy Glover, who with former St Albans Mayor, Gordon Myland, is one of two mummers who have been performing for over 40 years, said: “It was a lovely day and relatively mild and people were out and about. Inevitably we were a bit worried in the run-up but we had a very pleasant day. As far as I can gather, everyone is pretty happy about it.”
