STAFF at the Co-op store in Harpenden shunned the dismal weather by holding a summer beach party at the end of August.

Members of staff at the Southdown Road store donned their sun hats and shades to dress up for the event, which was held to raise funds for Mencap, the Co-Operative’s charity of the year for 2011.

Thanks to the efforts of Co-op colleagues, supported by members and customers, Mencap is now rolling out its Inspire Me programme at locations across the UK, providing activities, training and employment opportunities that will give young people with a learning disability the chance to build their confidence and develop life skills.

Angelo Imbriano, Harpenden store manager, said: “We’ve been busy fundraising for Mencap and we’re all determined to keep the momentum going right through until the end of the year.

“It’s fantastic to know that fun events like this one can help inspire thousands of young people with a learning disability to change their world.”
