Bales of hay at Batford Farm in Common Lane, Harpenden, were set alight on Sunday July 31 and for a second time on Sunday August 7.

As a result there has been thousands of pounds worth of damage to the farm during the busy harvest season.

The first incident saw 30 bales of hay set alight and it is currently unknown how many bales were set alight during the second fire.

PC Jane Flemons is investigating and said: “The farm has been targeted by youths who have been climbing over the straw and disturbing cattle, including calves. This has escalated to the two fires being started which has cost the farmer significantly.

“I would appeal to anyone who knows who may be responsible for these incidents to please contact me with information.

“I would also ask parents to speak with their children not only about the dangers of starting fires but about being on a farm and near livestock. Anyone found to have been involved in any offences could also end up with a criminal record.”

Anyone who has any information which could assist the investigation is asked to contact the Herts Police non-emergency number 101 or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
