AN attempted robbery has taken place in St Albans city centre this afternoon (Tuesday).

Witnesses at the scene have reported that a security guard was attacked as he made his way to a security van outside a bank.

It is believed a cash box was taken.

A vehicle was also spotted leaving the scene by mounting the opposite pavement and heading towards the Merchant Tea Room. A man was knocked over by the car as a result and has been taken to hospital.
