Sherwood Avenue Park, St Albans. Vandals

ARSONISTS have targeted a local park in the run up to the Easter holidays.

Firefighters were called to the park in Sherwood Avenue, St Albans, in the very early hours of Sunday morning and arrived to find a large basket swing engulfed in flames.

They quickly put out the fire but the damage has rendered the play equipment unusable.

It’s the second time the basket swing has been targeted by vandals and in 2009 the Herts Advertiser reported on numerous incidents of criminal damage at the park and adjoining tennis club, which are owned by Sandridge Parish Council.

A police spokesperson said that they were treating the latest incident as arson and were actively trying to track down those responsible, which would include looking at any CCTV footage.

The force was alerted to the blaze by a member of the public when the fire broke out and it is believed to have been started by stuffing newspaper into the swing and setting it alight.

Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 33 00 222.
