London Colney-based Arsenal Ladies are teaming up with a Harpenden club to promote girls’ football in the community.

As part of an ongoing initiative, Harpenden Colts has announced its affiliation with Arsenal Ladies as part of The FA’s Women’s Super League (WSL) Sister Clubs Programme.

More than £100,000 has been invested by the FA into the programme, which aims to drive girls’ participation at grassroots level and attendances at FA WSL matches.

Following successful bids, 11 clubs were chosen to take part this season, including Arsenal.

As a result of their affiliation with Arsenal Ladies and as part of the programme, Harpenden Colts will receive an array of benefits, including access to match tickets, coaching sessions, camps, mascot places and club specific soccer schools.

Lead coach for Harpenden Colts Girls’ Section, Simon King, said: “ We have seen interest in girls’ football really take off and our female membership has increased by about 300 per cent in the last two years.

“It’s clear that our young players love the game and we hope our association with Arsenal Ladies via the Sister Clubs programme will both reward current players and encourage more to get involved.

“The fact that more than 25 Colts [recently] attended an Arsenal Ladies Soccer School shows how enthusiastic the girls are.”

Arsenal Ladies have linked with 12 girls’ clubs across three levels.

FA head of women’s leagues and competitions, Katie Brazier, said: “We know that the success of the league in terms of both attendance and quality is driven by strong grassroots support and this programme will allow clubs to build this even further.

“We look forward to welcoming all the sister clubs and their players at FA WSL games throughout the season.”

• Arsenal Ladies take on Manchester City Women this Sunday, September 11, at Meadow Park. Kick-off is at 2pm.
