St Albans MP Anne Main has urged a rethink of the proposed constituency boundary changes.

The Boundaries Commission has proposed reducing the number of MPs to 600 and excluding London Colney from the St Albans constituency and making it part of Hertsmere.

She said: “I strongly believe, after many years of working with the London Colney community, the people there have a strong affinity with St Albans and would wish to continue to be represented in that constituency.

“I am also very concerned at the reduction in the number of MPs from 650 to 600. While I agree we need to cut the cost of politics and make constituencies more equal, by removing 50 backbench MPs and making no plans to reduce the size of the executive, we risk giving too much power to the government with reduced scrutiny from backbench and opposition MPs.

“I hope that there will be a rethink to these plans and I will continue to push to keep London Colney in St Albans constituency.”
