THE county's worst golfer has been crowned with the title during a ceremony which fittingly took place in a bunker at a local course after she proved how much she needed professional coaching.

Herts Worst Golfer, run in association with the Herts Advertiser, dug up the county's finest hackers, hapless fairway choppers and potty punters with its X-Factor style competition.

But it was Angela Giblin from Welwyn Garden City who impressed the three expert judges at Redbourn Golf Club the most with her golfing blunders, winning her a year's worth of free golf lessons to improve her game.

Angela said: "I nominated myself for this competition because I know I am rubbish at golf. All the men in my family play golf, including my son Alex - he's already better than me and he's only five-years-old.

"They all go out and have fun on a Sunday while I am at home cooking lunch and I thought: 'I want to be out there having fun too'. My father and my brother have tried to give me some tips but it hasn't really worked, so I am looking forward to having some professional lessons."

Angela's goal is to improve her golf so that she can eventually venture onto the main 18-hole course.

She added: "I'd love to be able to play a full round without getting fed up at being so rubbish. They say golf is a good walk spoiled, but I would be quite happy to have my walk spoiled just as long as I could hit a few good shots along the way."

Angela will receive regular coaching from Redbourn Golf Club's new professional, James Blake, who will spend time with her at the club's recently upgraded covered driving range and on the par-3 short course.

Judge and golf-pro Steve Hunter, said: "Angela is determined to be a better golfer and I think she has good potential. Even in a short space of time, she responded well to the advice we were giving her and hit some great shots.

He added: "We run coaching schemes for women three days a week at Redbourn and it's great to see more ladies enjoying the sport. I have no doubt that Angela will be giving the men in her family a run for their money in due course.
