Dividing up the spoils of victory in a county maths challenge were a quartet of pupils from a junior school.

The four Year Five pupils from Crabtree Junior School won first prize in the annual Herts Maths Challenge.

Dexter Smith, Max Martin, Greg Clark and Ben Chapman competed against 10 other schools at Wood End JMI in Harpenden. They solved a range of challenging problems, puzzles and activities before making it through to the grand final at the Herts development centre in Stevenage.

The boys then had to tackle more difficult mathematical problems including a memory round, estimation round and two team rounds before winning first place in the competition.

Elise Clements, maths subject leader at Crabtree, said: “It is a real challenge and it requires team work, resilience and quick thinking and they’re not presented with the problems for very long.”

Ben Chapman, who was part of the winning team, said: “It was such a great achievement for us all. None of us expected to win.”
