AN ACCIDENT black spot in London Colney needs safety improvements to avoid further accidents, a resident has warned.

Steve Greenwood, of Napsbury Park, said he was compelled to contact the Herts Advertiser after reading of yet another accident on the Napsbury Lane Bridge over the A414 earlier this month.

Steve, who regularly travels over the bridge, says the junction at the end of the slip road from the A414 is a prime spot for accidents because vision is so limited. He said: “If you are waiting to turn right, the blind spot beyond the brow of the bridge does not give much time to execute the turn if you then look left quickly – it’s in that split second that a motorbike or car can appear and it’s an accident just waiting to happen.

“People who don’t know the area and are coming from the other direction won’t know about the junction because there are no warning signs. Vehicles will be over the bridge before they see any turning cars and then it’s too late if they’re going at any speed.”

Steve approaches the junction by using the middle of the slip road, but says that even looking left for oncoming traffic is made difficult because of poorly tended trees and bushes. “They completely restrict the driver’s line of vision and it’s something that the council really need to address.”

With no footpath along the bridge and further down Napsbury Lane, the junction is not the only problem. Steve added: “People do walk down there and because there’s no footpath, they have to balance on the narrow verges.”

The IT worker said he often saw fresh flowers laid in memory of previous crash victims and called on the council to prevent further injuries or deaths by installing speed humps or single line traffic width restrictions on the brow of the bridge.

Two cars collided on the busy bridge earlier this month, closing Napsbury Lane for almost two hours.

A spokesperson for Herts County Council said: “We are awaiting confirmation of the cause of the latest collision before considering whether any safety measures are required at this junction. At this stage, there are no planned works.”
