ST ALBANS Abbey has received a share of a £2 million grant which it plans to spend on restoration work.
The Abbey got £94,000 from English Heritage and The Wolfson Foundation as part of a joint grants scheme which will benefit 28 cathedrals.
The money will be spent on conservation work for the nave, involving the repair of the Norman walls, windows and plaster work
Justin Cross, St Albans Abbey administrator, said that the conservation work was part of a larger £900,000 10-year project that would see a lift and new video equipment installed in the nave.
The English Heritage Cathedral Grants Scheme has been running since 1991 when a survey showed that the country's 61 cathedrals needed a huge amount of repairs which they could not fund alone.
