A HIV charity is counting its blessings after a dozen county councillors clubbed together to give them a Christmas bonus of £7,000.

The Crescent, based in Russell Avenue, St Albans, will use the money to help keep its counselling and therapy service running, which has been under threat since it lost out on a crucial funding from Herts County Council. Each councillor has awarded a sum of cash out of their £10,000 locality budget that should be spent on local worthwhile community projects.

Iain Murtagh, the charity’s head of operations, said: “We have had an enormous amount of support from local county councillors, which has helped us a great deal.

“£7,000 is a wonderful sum for us. It has given us a significant boost. It still does not allow us to run everything that we would like but it goes along way towards it.”
