Nearly 300 people signed a worldwide nuclear disarmament petition at St Albans market on Saturday.
St Albans Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament were harvesting local support for a nationwide petition by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
The campaign urges the Government to follow 122 other countries and sign a United Nations treaty banning nuclear weapons.,
St Albans Bishop Alan Smith was one of the signatories on Saturday.
Chair of the St Albans campaign, Dr David Leigh, said: “If we do not get rid of nukes, they will get rid of us.
“Avoiding a nuclear catastrophe is not a party issue, everyone wants a future for their children and for humanity.”
ICAN was founded in Australia and formally launched in Austria in April 2007. It is inspired by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which was instrumental in establishing the Ottawa Treaty.
