AFTER years of failing to claim expense allowances, Harpenden Town councillors have finally voted to take £300 each per year.
The decision was unanimously approved at a meeting on Monday evening.
Speaking after the meeting, Cllr John Chambers, who is also a district councillor, said: "To be honest, it probably won't even cover the cost of all our phone calls, computer cartridges and bits and pieces.
"But I suppose it might help any would-be councillors who might want to come forward but are put off by the costs involved."
He said that St Albans District Councillors were able to claim about £5,500 each in expenses and more if they took on extra responsibilities.
The Harpenden Town councillors had considered taking £500 each per year but the proposal was defeated.
