Allegations of animal cruelty involving dogs being kept in poor conditions in Hertfordshire are being investigated by police and the RSPCA.

Images circulating on social media appear to show dogs at a property in Ware being housed in cramped and filthy crates, without access to clean water.

Other images appear to show dogs tied closely together outdoors, without any shelter or water.

One member of the public pleaded: "Do something for these poor animals", while another said: "It breaks my heart."

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: "We appreciate the strength of feeling from the community and we are liaising with the police.

"Unfortunately, we are unable to discuss complaints about specific people and what action may have been taken, for legal reasons.

"We understand how frustrating that is for animal lovers, but releasing information could prejudice a future investigation, or could lead to us being fined."

A police spokesperson said: "We are aware of highly emotive information circulating online regarding the welfare of dogs at a property in Ware.

"We are currently liaising with the RSPCA in relation to this matter.

"We understand this may cause concern within the community; however, we will not tolerate any criminal activity, and any offences identified will be dealt with robustly."
