The future of a Halifax branch in Hertfordshire has been confirmed amid rumours of its closure.

It follows reports Lloyds Banking Group is preparing to close 79 additional branches across Britain over the coming year.

The latest round of closures is expected to impact 31 Lloyds Bank branches and 48 Halifax sites, which Lloyds own.

Hemel Hempstead's branch of Halifax, in the Marlowes Shopping Centre, is one of those set to be impacted.

Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed the branch will shut for good on October 1, with affected staff set to be offered roles at other branches.

It said customers in the area will still be able to bank in person - with no changes to their accounts - at the nearby Lloyds branch.

The banking giant added it is contact customers to let them know about the alternate local banking services available.

Defending the closure, a spokesperson said: "With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, customers can now use any of our Lloyds or Halifax branches, including the nearby Lloyds branch.

"Alongside other local banking options like our Community Bankers, the nearby Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before."
