More than 100 Hertfordshire residents have called on the county council not to fell a “beautiful and mature tree” on the Park Street roundabout.
According to the petition, which ran on the authority’s website until Tuesday (May 18), the county council had given assurances that no more mature trees would be felled on the roundabout.
But now, it says, a further tree is to be felled as a result of alterations planned to accommodate the Park Street rail freight.
The petition calls on the county council to “save” the three mature trees that remain on the roundabout.
“Despite the promises and assurances that no more mature trees will be felled on the Park Street roundabout last spring, a beautiful tree has been targeted by Herts County Council Highways and Segro to be felled,” states the petition.
“It sits on land between Watling Street and Butt Field View, and it is part of the screen that still protects the Tithe Barn estate from noise and air pollution.
“This has really affected the neighbourhood since other mature trees and vegetation were removed last year.
“It is important for the wildlife and biodiversity in this area, which is known to have bats and nesting birds, especially at this time of year.
“Enough mature trees have been lost already because of this project and the wildlife lost is lost forever. The health of residents should be paramount too.”
The petition ran for 10 days, between May 8 and May 18, and ‘signed’ by 128 people, who either live or work in the county.
However, that support falls short of the 250 signatures required for the petition to be formally considered by one of the county council’s cabinet panels.
Commenting on the petition, a spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council said: “We like to hear from our residents and petitions are a great way of highlighting local issues of concern.
“Unfortunately, in this instance, the petition did not gather the required signatures and as such will not go forward to the relevant panel for consideration.”
