Eight officers in the St Albans district have been nominated for Royal Humane Awards for their actions in two separate emergencies.

Five of the officers—PCs Iffy Iqbal, Jem Oliver, and Phil Burns, PCSO Ads Russo, and PC Dave Vass—were given recognition awards at St Albans Police Station on May 14.

Sergeant Mark Essam said: "Thanks to the quick actions and teamwork of these officers, two lives have been saved.

"Without their response, I have no doubt these people would have died.

"Officers do so much more than catch criminals – we are here day and night helping save lives."

On April 9, PCs Iqbal and Oliver, along with PCSO Russo, responded to a GoodSam alert after a woman in her 90s went into cardiac arrest in Harpenden.

They used a defibrillator and gave CPR for 11 minutes until ambulance crews arrived.

Just days earlier, on March 29, a man collapsed in his van in St Albans.

Officers gave CPR for 16 minutes until air ambulance crews arrived.
