An email warning of a £500 charge for homes without a working smoke alarm has been reported as a scam.

It comes after a resident reported receiving an email claiming they will have a home visit to check smoke alarms.

Hertfordshire Council Council has confirmed the email is a scam and said it would never charge for home fire safety visits.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: "This is a scam and Hertfordshire County Council never charge to carry out a home fire safety visit".
