Details have emerged about the discovery of a "suspicious device" which closed a busy road in Hemel Hempstead.
The device was found at 6.45pm by the Grand Union Canal, Station Road, by people magnet fishing, Hertfordshire Police has confirmed.
A spokesperson for the force said: "It was believed to be a smoke bomb potentially like the ones used in football matches.
"Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists were called and a controlled explosion was carried out at 8.50pm last night, as a routine and precautionary measure."
