A helicopter and a light aircraft came close to a mid-air collision over St Albans, a report has revealed.
On October 6, 2025, a yellow Helicopter Emergency Medical Service aircraft was flying over the city when the pilot was "startled by an unexpected light aircraft nearby".
According to a report from the Airprox Board, the aircraft passed to the right of the helicopter "within an estimated distance of 250m laterally and 250ft vertically", but "no traffic or proximity alert was received".
Upon returning to base, the helicopter crew attempted to identify the aircraft and verify its proximity, but "no trace or flight data of the aircraft in question was found".
The Airprox Board were also unable to trace the light aircraft or its pilot.
In a report into the incident, some members of the board believed that there had "not been enough information with which to assess the risk" of the incidents, and "the separation had been enough to exclude the risk of collision".
"The chair conducted a vote and, by a majority, it was agreed that there had been no risk of collision, but that safety had been reduced," the report concluded.
