The incident occurred in Sawbridgeworth at around 9.05pm on Wednesday (March 25) and involved a blue Ford Fiesta.

It is reported the vehicle had been travelling on Redricks Lane in the direction of High Wych Road when it left the carriageway and collided with a tree before landing back in the road.

One of the passengers, who can be named as 17-year-old Megan Swann, died at the scene.

Two other teenage girls were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing injury by dangerous driving.

In tribute to Megan, her family said: “Megan was a daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter, cousin and friend.

“She was a bright, beautiful, caring and loving young girl. She had a zest for life with an infectious personality.

"If you met her once you would never forget her.

“You would hear Megan before you saw her and hear her laughter.

“She was doing so well with her college and was on track to pass her hair and beauty course with flying colours.

“She was only 17 with her whole life ahead of her.

“Her sudden death has left us all with a deep ache that will never heal.

“She will be forever missed.

“Megan, we all love you xx”

Detective Sergeant Ben Heath, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with Megan’s family at this difficult time.

“I am appealing for any information that could help with our enquiries.

“Did you see a blue Ford Fiesta travelling in the area at the time?

“Or did you witness the events leading up to the collision?

“If you were travelling in the area and have a dash cam fitted, please review your footage as you may have captured something which could assist our investigation.”
