A man has been sentenced to 24 weeks in prison for thefts and going equipped in Harpenden.
Mathew Bailey, 32, of no fixed abode, was sentenced at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, February 28.
PC Jem Oliver arrested Bailey at 8.20pm on Thursday, February 26 after he was spotted on Harpenden Town Council CCTV entering Sainsbury’s.
Bailey was charged with four counts of theft from Sainsbury’s, High Street:
- January 28 – two bottles of champagne
- February 14 – two bottles of spirits
- February 16 – four bottles of whisky
- February 27 – one bottle of whisky
He was also charged with going equipped, after officers found wire cutters used to de-tag items.
The 32-year-old pleaded guilty to all offences and has been referred to support services.
A Facebook post by the force added: "Shoplifting may seem victimless, but it drives up the cost of goods for everyone and can lead to reduced availability of certain products.
"Police officers continue to work closely with local shops and partners to tackle theft and keep our community safe."
