St Albans: Home Bargains submits plans for new store

A planning application made on behalf of Home Bargains earmarks the former Homebase unit in Hatfield Road for a new store.

The former Homebase unit in St Albans. (Image: Google Maps) The St Albans DIY and Garden branch shut in March and has since been left vacant, with new options like home tool shops, gyms and mini-outlets all suggested by our readers.

Documents attached to the plans show a comprehensive refurbishment of the building and layout comprising a new shopfront, sprinkler tank, pumphouse, trolley shelter; and associated works.

The applicant believes that the proposal contributes "positively" to the St Albans area and "secures long-term occupation" of the existing retail unit.

"The proposed store when opened, would retain / generate up to 100 full and part-time job opportunities," a supporting statement reads.

"The high-quality, modern retail unit and shop fit out proposed will result in additional investment in the local economy."

TJ Morris Ltd - which trades as Home Bargains - promises an investment exceeding £3 million into the shop.

Home Bargains do not currently operate in the St Albans area, with the nearest stores in Stevenage and Waltham Abbey.

The unit's previous occupier, Homebase, shut its Alban Park location as part of closures nationwide.

At the time a spokesperson for Homebase said: "We have announced 16 stores confirmed for closure in March.

"Affected team members have been given notice of their effective date of redundancy by their employee representative and store manager, followed by confirmation letters sent to their home address."

A decision date is yet to be confirmed for the plans that are currently subject to public consultation until June 13, 2025.
