Residents of St Albans have been issued poll cards for the upcoming local elections on Thursday, May 2.

The elections will determine the positions for the Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner and 21 of the 56 seats in the district council.

The poll cards have been posted to approximately 110,000 individuals who have registered to vote.

St Albans City and District Council has urged recipients to carefully review these cards to confirm their assigned wards and respective polling stations.

Although voters are not required to carry their poll cards while going to vote, having them simplifies the process for the polling station staff to locate individuals on the electoral register.

Amanda Foley, returning officer for St Albans City and District, said: "We are asking people to look out for their poll cards and to keep them safe for when they can vote.

"We don’t want people turning up to the wrong place to vote, so it is important that they check the details, particularly the location of the polling station."

Acceptable photo ID, which is required, includes a current or expired UK passport or driver's licence with a photograph which correlates accurately with the voting individual.

For residents without any of the accepted ID variants, there's an option to apply for a free ID online.

Further details regarding the acceptable photo ID and the application process for a free ID, known as a Voter Authority Certificate, can be discovered on the poll cards as well as the Electoral Commission's website.

Residents that voted in the previous year's elections and have not altered their details will still find their registration valid.

All individuals aged 18 or above who have not registered at their current address are advised to do so by midnight, Tuesday, April 16.

The list of candidates standing for the elections will be released post 4pm, Friday, April 5.

This year, district council elections will be held in 18 of the 20 district wards except Colney Heath and Redbourn.

Elsewhere, elections for the Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner will occur throughout the district.
