St Albans has been chosen as the theme for the latest edition of popular board game Monopoly - with The Herts Advertiser given its own spot on the board.

An official announcement will take place at St Albans Cathedral's west end entrance at 10am today (Tuesday, February 27) with top hats, large Monopoly props, giant money and cards expected.

Last month, the public was invited to nominate one location in Hertfordshire to become the first to get its very own Monopoly board game.

The six areas considered were Hertford, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, Stevenage, Watford and Welwyn Garden City.

The new Monopoly: St Albans Edition will see over 30 city landmarks and favourites showcased on the board, replacing the likes of ‘Mayfair’ and ‘Park Lane’ from the classic game.

The property sets will be themed in genres, from tourism to heritage, arts to business, entertainment to education, shopping to leisure.

The quartet of train stations from the original will take on a ‘travel’ theme, due to St Albans not having "a multitude of main-line train stations to select".

The Chance and Community Chest cards will also be customised.

For example, one card could send players back three spaces for shopping in Watford rather than St Albans City Centre, according to organisers.

The Herts Advertiser will feature in the game, with its very own spot on the board.

St Albans residents have been invited to suggest landmarks and the language used on Community Chest and Chance cards.
