Described as "wonderful" and "loved very much", a St Albans couple are set to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary next week.

Royston (known as Roy) and Margaret Brooks will celebrate 50 years of marriage on Tuesday (January 9).

The pair first met in 1972 at Horfield Health Centre, in Bristol, where Margaret worked as a practice nurse, and Roy worked as a nurse in the local community.

Roy would visit Margaret to collect supplies, and it was "love at first sight" according to their daughters.

On January 9, 1974, they were married after an intimate ceremony at Quakers Friary in Bristol.

Roy earned a place as a power engineering apprentice and the couple were soon required to relocate to Pembroke Dock in Pembrokeshire.

It was in Wales where they lived happily and, in June 1975, had their first daughter Sarah.

Their second daughter, Ruth, arrived in January 1981 and their family was complete.

The family lived in Pembrokeshire until 1983, when they followed employment opportunities and moved to Caerleon in Newport.

There they stayed until 1992, when they moved to St Albans, and the city has been their "happy home" ever since.

They are now the "wonderful parents-in-law" to Jake and Oyvind, and grandparents to Ella, 9, Monty, 8, and Hermione, 6.

Ruth and Sarah described: "They take great pleasure in their active roles for St. Michaels Church, and love to travel, especially to South Africa, to enjoy their second home.
