Juliet Voisey, the Green councillor for St Peter's ward, has questioned the St Albans Liberal Democrats for putting a "pretend" St Albans newspaper and magazine through residents' doors.

Over the past week, a 'St Albans Living' magazine arrived through residents letterboxes, claiming to have an interview with the city's MP Daisy Cooper.

This followed a 'St Albans Gazette' which has been delivered by the Liberal Democrats in recent times.

Cllr Voisey said: "It’s a bit odd that the Lib Dems seem to be trying to fool people into reading their newsletter by pretending it’s something else.

"That might be because there’s a feeling that people are increasingly turned off by the usual politics.

"We have seen this reflected in the huge growth in support for the Greens.

"In St Albans we jumped from one councillor to three last year, and in the city we are the only opposition to the Lib Dems.

"We’re looking forward to further success in the local elections in May."

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrat MP for St Albans, Daisy Cooper, has defended the leaflets.

She began: “In all my years of campaigning, I’m yet to meet a single person who has received a Lib Dem publication and been unable to distinguish it from a local newspaper.

“A General Election is expected in a matter of months and the choice in St Albans will be between another out-of-town out-of-touch Conservative, or me: a local Liberal Democrat who has shown St Albans the difference a hard-working MP can make."

The Conservative candidate for St Albans at the next General Election, James Spencer, grew up in Colney Heath before moving to Jersey Farm.

He commented: "I am always far more concerned about what the Lib Dems say in their leaflets rather than how they look, and again, all we hear is negativity and no solutions.

"It's also disappointing to see nothing in the leaflet about what our Lib Dem MP is doing to hold the Lib Dem District Council to account."
