More than 135 people braved the cold to raise money for the homeless at the St Albans Sleepout.

The event, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, took place at Oaklands College on Friday, November 10.

The Sleepout saw participants, including youth groups, local businesses and members of the community, sleep outside all night on a bed of cardboard to raise money for charities and experience what life if like for their service users.

Herts Young Homeless organised the event, which was sponsored by local businesses Mulalley and Echelon.

The Watford Rapid Relief Team provided a free breakfast in the morning, while St Albans Arts ran the evening's entertainment.

Also in attendance were Hertfordshire High Sheriff Liz Green, MP Daisy Cooper, Mayor of St Albans Cllr Anthony Rowlands and Deputy Mayor Cllr Josie Madoc.

Jonny Whitehead, chief executive of Herts Young Homeless, said: "It was heart-warming to see over 135 members of our community brave the cold and take part in the Sleepout - with temperatures dropping to as low as three degrees during the night.

"This was a single night for those who took part, compared to those who have no choice but to rough sleep each night.

"Everybody I spoke to, from local youth groups through to community businesses and families, felt humbled by the experience."

Collectively, more than £56,000 has been raised for Herts Young Homeless, Open Door, The Living Room, Centre 33 and Emmaus.

Among the participants were Emmaus Hertfordshire companion Chris and the charity's business development manager Gemma Beckett.

Gemma said: "It was especially poignant for us, because for Chris, sleeping rough on the streets at the mercy of the elements was his life 24/7, for five months before coming to our community, as it was for many of our companions.

"We are beyond proud of him for taking part to help raise funds and awareness of our charity.

"It really brought home to me just how fortunate I am to have a warm home to go back to, and how important it is that we continue our work to provide that for people like Chris too."
