Mayor of St Albans Cllr Anthony Rowlands has added his voice to a homelessness charity's appeal for more volunteers to help continue their work.

Centre 33 prepares a hot meal for dozens of homeless people for five nights each week, from the kitchen of the Salvation Army church in Victoria Street.

The service is used by rough sleepers, people living in hostels or temporary accommodation and people who are socially or materially disadvantaged.

Centre 33 trustee Melanie O'Neill explained why new volunteers are needed. She said: "Without them, it would be impossible to function.

"It doesn’t matter how much or how little time you have to offer, every little helps."

Cllr Rowlands spent time listening to people using the service, including former prisoners, victims of domestic violence and those struggling with loneliness.

He said: "As we head towards winter, the provision of hot meals for those who would otherwise go hungry is an essential service.

"Thanks go to all the volunteers who give of their time throughout the year to support some of our neediest residents."

The Salvation Army also points service users towards a food bank, an employment clinic and drug addiction classes.
