Two people sustained suspected stab wounds outside Oaklands College in St Albans yesterday (Monday, October 9), police have confirmed. 

Hertfordshire police were called at 3.41pm to reports of a disturbance outside the St Albans campus on Hatfield Road. 

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "Officers attended along with other emergency services.

"Two people are believed to have been injured and have sustained suspected stab wounds."

It is understood that armed police, the police helicopter and an air ambulance were all sent to the scene.

Witnesses told the Sun newspaper that two pupils from the college were stabbed, though this is not confirmed. CCTV footage from a nearby business showed a man with a machete.

A statement was published on the Oaklands College Facebook page, stating that there had been a "serious incident" near the college, and confirming that their campus had been used "as a central space for the emergency services".

"We take the safety and security of our students and our staff extremely seriously," it said.

"It is our number one priority to ensure that the college community is a completely safe place for learning and we will be increasing security presence tomorrow for reassurance.

"We are working closely with the police, who are investigating the incident."

They confirmed that the college is open as normal today (Tuesday, October 10).
