A newly-refurbished Burma Star Association Memorial was unveiled in St Albans yesterday (August 15).

The day marked the 78th anniversary of VJ Day, victory over Japan in WWII.

St Albans Mayor Councillor Anthony Rowlands attended a service of dedication for the memorial, conducted by Rev Mark Dearnley, in the grounds of St Peter's Church.

Mayor Rowlands was joined by representatives of the Royal British Legion (RBL), both St Albans and Hertfordshire branches, as well as some members of the public.

Ian Blackmore, a St Albans resident and RBL member, organised the refurbishment of the memorial garden and plaque with help from St Albans City and District Council and local engravers Andy Shoesmiths.

The Burma Star Association was founded in 1951 to help and honour British veterans of the Second World War campaign in Burma.

Cllr Rowland said: “Those who fought in the faraway Burma campaign between 1941 and 1945 were often referred to as our Forgotten Army.

“However, this memorial is a way of making sure they are remembered and that we can pay our respects to the sacrifices that were made.

“I was impressed with the thought and care that has gone into restoring both the plaque and surrounding garden. Those involved deserve the thanks of our whole community.”
