Three people have been arrested after being pursued on road and foot by Hertfordshire police.

The pursuit took place on Friday (June 30), in the Chaulden area of Hemel Hempstead.

Whilst travelling along Long Chaulden at around 2am, officers noticed two "suspicious looking vehicles" at a T-junction.

As the officers turned around to speak to the drivers, both vehicles "made off at speed".

According to Hertfordshire Constabulary, "One of the vehicles seemed unsure of their decision and stopped, allowing three male passengers to jump out and give it legs, although the driver didn't want to stick around and once again drove off at speed".

After giving chase on foot, one of the individuals was quickly detained.

As addition police officers arrived, a "containment" was placed in the area, a police helicopter assisted and a dog unit was requested.

Two men were found by the dogs, having hidden in a garden.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary added: "Officers returned to where they originally saw the vehicles and began making enquiries along the street, noticing there was only one house with no car on the driveway.

"Call it a ‘copper’s nose’ - upon waking the occupants of the house up, they realised their car had been stolen, along with items from inside their address, so this was a confirmed ‘myriapod burglary’ where offenders break in to a house in order to steal car keys.

"Minutes later, officers received a call from an eagle-eyed member of the public who had seen a vehicle abandoned with the engine running - it was the stolen vehicle, only 200 metres away from the address it had been taken from...

"...Two days later the neighbourhood sergeant, acting on intelligence received, set about looking for the getaway vehicle and quickly found it hidden away in a garage block in Dacorum.

"It turned out that the vehicle was on false plates and had been stolen from London earlier in the month.

"The vehicle was forensically recovered."

The three men were arrested on suspicion of burglary, with enquiries ongoing into the incident.
