A planning application has been submitted by McCarthy and Stone for 53 retirement homes to be built in Wheathampstead.

If approved, the site to the south of Codicote Road and Cory-Wright Way will include 10 bungalows as well as an apartment block containing 43 homes.

Of the 53 properties, 25 will have one bedroom, 24 will have two bedrooms, and the remaining four will have three bedrooms. All of them will be priced at market rates.

The building containing the apartments will be three storeys high, and the application includes room for 50 car parking spaces. Road access to the site will be from a turning on Cory-Wright Way.

According to a report submitted as part of the application, the market-rate housing sector in St Albans had "an anticipated existing shortfall of 237 retirement units...as of 2022".

McCarthy and Stone, a developer specialising in retirement homes, submitted the application earlier this month (April). Residents can now make comments on the application.
