Wheathampstead has been named on the The Sunday Times' Best Places to Live 2023 list, with the newspaper hailing it as the "king of commuter villages".

The village was given that accolade despite not having a train station, and earned plenty of praise from judges who visited every location and and assessed a range of factors before making their decision.

"It may no longer have a station of its own, but the ancient capital of southern England is definitely the king of the commuter villages," said the judges.

"You can be in central London in an hour, but the surroundings couldn’t feel more rural, and the community couldn’t be more friendly, with volunteers getting involved in everything from restoring the disused station to running the community library."

This year's guide - the eleventh edition - features more locations than ever before, with sponsors Halifax providing house prices for every location.

Wheathampstead was the fifth most expensive place to live behind London's Earlsfield, Crouch Hill, King's Cross and Notting Hill, with an average house priced at £718,000.

Chichester in West Sussex was voted the best place to live in the south east, while the overall winner came from East Sussex, with Wadhurst taking top spot.
