School pupils from St Albans were awarded cash prizes of £250 each during an art competition.

A prize giving ceremony was held at OVO at The Maltings Theatre on Tuesday, December 13, for the 2022 Maltings Art Prize.

Along with £250 for each winner, £1,000 was also awarded to the relevant school's art department.

A crowd of 170 guests attended the awards ceremony, including finalists, parents and teachers.

There were over 800 entries to the competition, from nine local schools.

Fifty pieces of art were shortlisted for the final by a panel of judges that included Maltings Shopping Centre manager Phil Corrigan, MIX 92.6 presenter Ellie O’Meara and local artist Ben Askem.

Mr Corrigan commented: "I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in the competition, as you can imagine we had a very difficult time choosing the winners.

"The awards evening was fabulous, and it was great to see all our winners together.

"I hope this competition inspires students to think about art and it’s great to see such a variety of art and design in St Albans school."

A list of this year's winners can be seen below:

  • Age 5-7 Years. Group 5 winner: Leonardo, Cunningham Hill Primary School
  • Age 7-10 Years. Group 4 winner: Zachary Trotman, Abbey C of E Primary School
  • Age 10-13 Years. Group 3 winner: Thomas Bridge, Sandringham School
  • Age 13-16 Years. Group 2 winner: Freya Casey, Loreto College
  • Age 16-18 Years. Group 1 winner: Imogen Kingston, Nicholas Breakspear School
  • A ‘Special Merit’ Prize was also awarded to Rosalina Argenio from Loreto College.
