A LONG-serving vicar of a local church has resigned suddenly and unexpectedly.
The Rev David Brentnall, who led St Peter's Church in St Albans for 12 years, stepped down with immediate effect on Saturday, February 14.
Addressing the congregation with the news the following day, the Bishop of Hertford, the Rt Rev Christopher Foster, said the Rev Brentnall's decision was made on "personal grounds". He asked the parishioners to respect the privacy and confidentiality of Mr Brentnall and his wife Mary and to remember them in their prayers.
He added: "David has led this parish with inspiration and creativity, as we are aware, over more than 12 years with the active support of Mary, and I am grateful for their service." The diocese will be advertising the vacancy in due course.
